The Western Quebec Literacy Council (WQLC) has been a beacon of hope for the Outaouais community since 1984, offering free private lessons to people who want to improve their literacy skills. Their primary objective is to encourage and support lifelong learning, enabling individuals to reach their full potential.
By helping people to improve their reading, writing, math, and computer skills, the WQLC has changed over 1000 lives, improving job prospects, earning potential, self-confidence, and pride. The organization has also partnered with schools and trained volunteer tutors to help children develop a love for reading.
The WQLC's best features help individuals develop basic skills, including the ability to read and understand information, express their thoughts through writing, communicate verbally, do basic mathematics, use a computer, and understand signs and symbols. These skills are crucial for individuals to function in society and reach their full potential.
The WQLC is seeking volunteers in the Maniwaki region of Quebec, as well as surrounding areas like Aylmer, Hull, Gatineau, Quyon, Shawville, Campbell's Bay, Wakefield, Cantley, and Gracefield and so forth. Volunteer tutors receive comprehensive training to meet with the student that they are paired with for 1-2 hour lessons each week in their home community. By volunteering with the WQLC, individuals can make a real and valuable positive impact on their community.
Greg Graham, the Executive Director of the WQLC, brings a diverse background to his role, having worked in education as well as farming and business. A lifelong resident of Western Quebec, Greg is proud to raise his family in this vibrant community.
"While the traditional school system and adult learning programs do their part to promote literacy, there are still many individuals who may struggle with this crucial skill. For those individuals who may have fallen through the cracks of the system, we are here to support them," said Greg Graham.
The WQLC's commitment to promoting literacy and lifelong learning is making a significant impact on the community, helping individuals reach their full potential and improving their quality of life. Their continued success and growth are a testament to their unwavering dedication to their mission. It is a reflection of the Outaouais community's commitment to helping one another and fostering a culture of lifelong learning.
The organization's success is a result of the hard work and dedication of its volunteer tutors and staff, who share a passion for improving the lives of others. With the support of the community and new volunteers, the WQLC will continue to make a positive impact on the lives of individuals and families in the region.
