After 25 years without a local grocery store, residents of Old Hull are celebrating the opening of Saveurs Épicerie Urbaine, which officially opened its doors yesterday. Located at the corner of Wellington and Eddy streets, the 20,000 square foot market brings an end to the area’s long-standing food desert. Gatineau Mayor Maude Marquis-Bissonnette praised the opening as a major milestone for the community. The store offers a wide range of products, including fresh fish, cold cuts, fruits, vegetables, bakery items, and coffee, with 8,000 items in total, featuring both national and local brands. Owner Dany Plante, with 16 years of experience, promises competitive pricing between discount and traditional levels. In addition to free parking for the first hour, the store donated $2,000 to the local charity Soupe populaire de Hull.
