Gatineau and Ottawa residents alike have a vested interest in the prosperity of the Ottawa International Airport (YOW), a regional hub that not only connects Canada to the world but also supports local economic stability in both the Ottawa and Outaouais regions. At the recent Annual Public Meeting, YOW showcased its notable accomplishments, highlighted by a touching announcement from President and CEO Mark Laroche regarding his retirement.
Under Laroche's 12-year leadership, the airport not only weathered the storm of the global pandemic, but also achieved significant milestones. In the last year alone, YOW served 4.1 million passengers and reported net earnings of $10.6 million. New ventures were introduced, including the initiation of non-stop service to Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport by Air France and the groundbreaking of the Alt Hotel Ottawa Airport construction.
"As I reflect on Mark’s tenure as CEO, the word ‘visionary’ immediately comes to mind. While expert at managing today’s demands, Mark has consistently viewed the Airport through the long-term strategic lens of tomorrow and beyond," said Bonnie Boretsky, Chair of the Ottawa International Airport Authority Board.
Laroche's decision to retire was met with widespread acclaim for his dedication to enhancing regional connectivity and infrastructure. "Under Mark Laroche's tremendous leadership, YOW has been a valued partner for Ottawa's tourism industry," said Michael Crockatt, President and CEO of Ottawa Tourism.
The Gatineau community, particularly those in the Aylmer area, benefit significantly from the airport’s operations. Many Gatineau residents are employed at YOW, and the region’s travelers frequently use the airport for their journeys. "We know that many passengers from the entire Outaouais region start and finish their journey at YOW," Laroche stated, underscoring the airport's role in the National Capital Region's life.
Mark Sutcliffe, Mayor of the City of Ottawa, also praised Laroche's impact: "During Mark's time as CEO, the Airport has grown significantly, tackled significant challenges, including the global pandemic, and positioned itself for an outstanding future."
As the Ottawa International Airport looks forward to a new chapter with a new leader, the community remains thankful for Laroche’s years of service and the legacy of growth and resilience he leaves behind.
