At approximately 2:00 am on August 2, Gatineau Police were on the scene at the intersection of avenue Gatineau and rue Stéphane in the Carrefour-de-l’Hôpital district responding to a vehicle collision. A vehicle occupant provided information to police that led the officers to rue Aubin, approximately two minutes away from the collision. On scene, elements indicated that a possible hit-and-run had occurred.
Police set up a large security perimeter around the crime scene. Nearby residents were asked to avoid the area and to avoid touching objects that seemed out of place or could be evidence in the investigation.
The hit-and-run led to the death of 31-year-old Steve Servant. The individual was a resident of Val-des-Monts and was known to the police. His death is considered suspicious. An autopsy will be performed on the body at the Laboratory of Forensic Sciences and Forensic Medicine of Quebec in Montreal.
The investigation is ongoing to determine the cause and circumstances of death, along with the sequence of events. The K-9 unit was called to search the perimeter established by police. The Gatineau police forensic identification service also analyzed the scene. Police also used a drone to document the scene and they met with several witnesses.
Simon Brossoit, a 56-year-old Gatineau resident, was arrested for the murder of Servant. The Director of Criminal and Penal Prosecutions (DPCP) has authorized several serious charges against him. The accused was known to police.
Brossoit is facing charges of second-degree murder, fatal hit-and-run, and dangerous driving causing the death of Steve Servant. The accused is also facing charges of attempted murder against a second man.
Gatineau police say the investigation is ongoing and there is a possibility of other charges being brought against the accused.
