Following a break due to weather, construction on Notre-Dame Street is set to start again.
On April 11, construction work on Notre-Dame street resumed and will be in effect until Fall 2023. Centrally located between boulevards Maloney and Labrosse, The City of Gatineau aims rehabilitate Notre-Dame street as a commercial hub.
Initiatives to redevelop Notre-Dame street date back to late 2017 as part of the Integrated Urban Revitalization (RUI) program for Old Gatineau. The big project has been carried out in six parts along Notre-Dame including boulevard Maloney Est, Monseigneur-Lemieux street, Campeau street, boulevard Lorrain, Sables street and boulevard Labrosse which is already completed. In total, “underground and surface infrastructures will be rebuilt over 6.1 kilometers,” according to the City of Gatineau.
With construction work on Labrosse wrapping up, this year, the focus will shift to boulevard Maloney. The city aims to make these big boulevards more welcoming to increase pedestrian traffic and business for locals.
“This large-scale work is aimed at enlarging the public square and creating bicycle paths and lanes,” reads the press release. “The sidewalks will also be widened to allow universal access and promote pedestrian movement. In addition, the City will plant approximately 200 new trees on Notre-Dame street between Labrosse and Maloney.”
Work on Notre-Dame this summer will also include the replacement of water and sewer lines, the reconstruction of sidewalks, curbs, roadway and paving, along with the replacement of the lighting system. Plans to develop the public squares of Remembrance and Notre-Dame are also put in place.
Ongoing construction work means that “closures of segments of the street are to be expected,” warns the City of Gatineau. Signs have already been installed to alert residents as they approach work sites and detour routes are set in place. Maps and updates on road closures can be found at gatineau.ca/our_dame.
