Magasins Trévi Inc., a prominent retailer specializing in pool products and services, recently pleaded guilty to charges under the Consumer Protection Act, according to an announcement made by the Office de la protection du consommateur. The guilty plea was entered on February 20, 2023, and the company was fined a total of $6,246 for its violations.
The charges brought against Magasins Trévi Inc. stemmed from an incident that occurred in May 2019, during which the company was found to have charged customers a higher price than what was advertised. Specifically, the company imposed an additional 1% fee on consumers who made their pool purchases through the Internet. These infractions were committed in the municipalities of Saint-Charles-Borromée and Gatineau.
The corporate headquarters of Magasins Trévi Inc., known as Trevi Stores, is located at 12775 Brault Street in Mirabel.
The Office de la protection du consommateur emphasized the importance of accurate pricing information for consumers. According to the laws in Quebec, it is strictly forbidden for any merchant, manufacturer, or advertiser to charge a price exceeding the one advertised. Furthermore, merchants are required to display an "all-inclusive" price, which encompasses all charges except taxes.
Consumers who have been subject to additional fees added by a merchant beyond the advertised price are encouraged to contact the Office de la protection du consommateur for guidance on seeking restitution.
Magasins Trévi Inc.'s guilty plea and subsequent fines serve as a reminder that businesses must adhere to consumer protection regulations, ensuring transparency and fair practices in their pricing strategies. The Office de la protection du consommateur remains dedicated to safeguarding consumer rights and holding accountable those who violate such regulations.
