In a significant shift in the Canadian government's leadership structure, Liberal MP Steven MacKinnon was recently sworn in as the government's chief coordinator in the House of Commons. The swearing-in ceremony took place at Rideau Hall, marking a pivotal moment in MacKinnon's political career. Representing the riding of Gatineau, MacKinnon steps into the role of Government House Leader. His new responsibilities include managing the government's legislative agenda and organizing the daily legislative actions of the party.
At the age of 57, MacKinnon brings considerable experience to his new position. He was first elected to the House in 2015 and has previously served as the parliamentary secretary to the minister of public services and procurement.
MacKinnon's appointment comes as he fills in for Karina Gould, who is departing the post to go on parental leave. Gould, preparing for the arrival of her second child, has been open about the challenges of balancing parliamentary responsibilities with parenthood. Her experience of returning to parliamentary duties after a short leave following the birth of her son in 2019 highlighted these challenges.
Karina Gould, recognized for her leadership in the House of Commons, has been a notable figure in Canadian politics. Representing the riding of Burlington, Ontario, she has informed The Canadian Press of her plans to continue participating in parliamentary activities, including voting remotely and attending cabinet meetings virtually.
Gould's tenure as House Leader began during Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's major cabinet shuffle last summer, a period marked by extensive changes in government portfolios. Her career has been distinguished by several cabinet positions, including minister of families, children and social development, minister of international development, and minister of democratic institutions.
Notably, at 36, Gould made history as the youngest woman to be named a cabinet minister in Canada. She also holds the distinction of being the first to give birth while in office, setting a precedent for women in politics and public service.
