In a landmark move poised to transform the transportation landscape of Gatineau, the federal and provincial governments have announced a joint investment of $35 million. This substantial infusion of funds is earmarked for a comprehensive overhaul of the city's roadways, with an eye toward enhancing traffic flow, improving safety for commuters, and stimulating the local economy.
Deputy Premier and Minister of Transport and Sustainable Mobility, Geneviève Guilbault, highlighted the multifaceted benefits of this initiative. "By investing $35 million in Gatineau's roads, we are not only enhancing the fluidity and safety for the region's commuters but also fueling the economic growth of the area," Guilbault articulated.
In a similar vein, Mathieu Lacombe, the Minister of Culture and Communications and also the Minister Responsible for the Outaouais region, shed light on the government's broader commitment to transportation development. "This funding dovetails with our numerous ongoing projects in the Outaouais. Combined with the expansion of Guy Lafleur Highway and other key infrastructure projects in Gatineau, we're poised to significantly upgrade our road network," Lacombe explained.
The joint venture received accolades from various government representatives. Steven Mackinnon, Member of Parliament for Gatineau, expressed his gratitude for this collaborative effort that promises to revitalize the city's transport networks, thereby amplifying economic vitality and enhancing the quality of life for Gatineau's residents.
Sophie Chatel, Member of Parliament for Pontiac, and Mathieu Lévesque, Member of Parliament for Chapleau, echoed these sentiments. They praised the government's support for critical projects like the widening of Pink Road and the extension of La Vérendrye Boulevard East, respectively. These projects, they noted, are pivotal in alleviating congestion and promoting smoother transit, directly benefiting the daily lives of citizens.
Suzanne Tremblay, Member of Parliament for Hull, described the announcement as a significant step forward for the Outaouais region, particularly highlighting the second phase of widening Pink Road in response to increased traffic demands.
Concluding the series of commendations, Gatineau's Mayor, France Bélisle, acknowledged the vital need for improved traffic flow and connectivity within the urban transport network. "The completion of the expansion works on Pink Road and La Vérendrye Boulevard will be a game-changer for our community," Bélisle stated, expressing gratitude for the federal and provincial governments' financial backing in modernizing Gatineau's infrastructure.
